Safeguard Derma Sense: #FaceUp to Acne

My kids are competitive swimmers who train almost everyday of the week.  My oldest has been swimming for nearly 5 years now.  For endurance athletes like them, competing on a national level is something that they all work hard for. Qualifying for the Batang Pinoy National Championship and Palarong Pambansa have proved to be her achievements in her swimming career, so far.
As a mom, I am in full support for her love for this sport.  My support goes all the way from taking her to training, preparing nutritious food to aid in her recovery, cheering for her in every competition, and also by making sure that she takes good care of her body and skin.  Since the pool is susceptible to a lot of germs, I remind her to wash her skin thoroughly after every training session.

So far, she has been fortunate to not experience any problems with acne, but she would tell me stories about how some of the swimmers would get so self-conscious about having to wear a swimsuit when they have acne on their backs (which they call bacne), shoulders, and chest. It is so bad that sometimes they don't show up for training because of their frustrations and insecurities brought about my acne.

Acne is the most common skin disease worldwide, most especially among teens, but it doesn't mean that we should let our teens suffer through it.. My teenager is lucky that she doesn't have to deal with acne problems, but I am not taking any chances. I always remind her that the most important way to maintain her clear skin is through a proper and consistent skin care regimen.

Acne can make it difficult for anyone to feel good about themselves, no matter what age you are.  But it is double worse for teens because acne can actually hinder them from not realizing their dreams.  Research has shown that acne and its effects can result in low self-esteem and poor self-image.

Acne may be triggered by various factors such as hormonal changes, diet and stress. However, one of the major causes of acne is germs.  Acne bacteria that get trapped in pores feed on excess oil and dead skin cells, which results in the inflammation on the skin that we see as pimples.
Although acne is a skin condition, its effects on teens can be more than skin deep.  Having a bad case of pimples can actually limit teens to achieving their dreams.

While I am glad that my teenage daughter doesn't have to suffer from the physical and psychological effects of acne, it is still good to train her in adopting a regular skin cleansing regimen which plays an important role in preventing acne.

Some of the SoMoms were recently invited to the official product launching by Proctor & Gamble. We watched “Hashtag: Pimples Anonymous,“ an information performance by PETA production that explores teens’ stories of physical and psychological struggles against pimples.

With SoMoms Jane, Me, Mish and Patty
After the play, we stayed behind for a talk with Safeguard Derma Sense Resource People: Maro Torres, Safeguard Brand Manager; Dr. Maria Pilar Lagdameo-Leuenberger, Fellow of the Phillippine Dermatological Society; Dr. Susana A. Estanislao, Counselling Psychologist, De La Salle University; Jenni Epperson, lifestyle blogger.

Here's are some reminders that you can share with your acne-prone teenager, according to these 4 experts:
1. Be patient. Give the Safeguard Derma Sense enough time to work. It may take 2 weeks to a month or longer before you see any changes.
2. Be consistent. Wash your face everyday, once or twice a day. Not using it regularly is the most common reason why acne problems persists.
3. Don't overdo it. Washing your face more than twice a day can only make skin worse. Dermatologist, Dr. Maria Pilar Lagdameo-Leuenberger, cannot stress it enough, over doing it will actually make acne problems worse.
4. Acne is temporary. DLSU Counsellor, Dr. Susana Estanislao, advices parents to encourage their teens to choose friends wisely so they don't feel burdened by the teasing that commonly occurs. Teenagers with acne problems should instead focus on their strengths. Remind our kids that most teens get some acne at some point. Also, we should remind them that there are a treatment options to keep acne under control.

We parents can play a crucial role in helping our teens face up to acne by educating ourselves and our teenagers that acne is treatable.  Dermatologically tested Safeguard Derma Sense is here to provide the skin of our teens some protection by neutralizing acne-causing bacteria and providing long lasting protection for mild to moderate acne sufferers.

Mommies, Safeguard DermaSense is readily available in the grocery.  Let's not make our teens suffer from acne longer than necessary!

  1. I like the Body wash version of Safeguard. It's easy to use and I love that the scent doesn't really run out easily. :) Sad that most teens experience acne. I've seen some Youtube vloggers who suffer through that and I'm glad safeguard has come up with this line for sensitive skin.
