5 Things We Should Know About Kids & Sleep + A Uratex Pillow Giveaway

As a concerned mother to a teen, a tween and a pre-teen, I sometimes question whether my kids are getting enough sleep. During school days, they wake up at around 6am, spend a full day in school, swim/train for about 2 hours after school, go home for a quick dinner and then do homework/study for about an hour before going to bed.

We have a big California King bed in our room. The kids don't sleep with us, but during the day, the kids love to gather in our room, and the bed is where we are all at.

I often wonder if our 9pm lights out for the 2 younger kids provide enough sleep for them to go through a typical school day. So I researched about it, and found out that teens need about 9 hours of sleep a night. We just hit the 9-hour mark. They go to bed at 9pm and wake up for school at 6 a.m.

My girls love to stay in my room on weekends. We spend a lot of time talking, and I really enjoy getting updated with what's going on in their lives. There are also times that everyone is engrossed with their own gadgets, my girls are chatting online with friends and the li'l man is playing some games. But it always makes me happy to have everyone so close to me physically.

5 Things We Should Know About Kids and Sleep:

1. Sleep Is Incredibly Important
Sleep plays an important role in our physical and mental well-being. It gives cells a chance to regenerate, muscles to repair themselves, and the brain a chance to form new connections to help us learn, focus and remember information.

2. Children & Teens Need More Sleep Than You Might Think
While quality rest is important for people of all ages, kids and even teenagers actually require more sleep than adults. Here’s a chart on the recommended number of hours sleep.

3. Try to Have the Same Bed Time and Wake Up Times on Weekends
I read that our internal clock functions best when our sleep and wake times remain relatively consistent. Setting bedtimes can sometimes seem like a battle, especially on weekends when the kids want to push their bedtimes to a much later time… eh kase nga weekends nga naman.

I don’t want to appear so rigid and controlling in my parenting, so we’ve reached a compromised. Ideally, our kids’ weekend bedtimes are not more than 2 hours than their weekday schedule.

4. Electronic gadgets and social media are are all potential sleep stealers
Nothing says, "Wake up, something's going on!" like the notification buzz coming from gadgets. In my house, it comes in all forms: imessage and FBC for the teen, Google Hangouts for the tween, text message or Mine Craft and Clash of Clans notifications for my pre-teen.

To help my kids control the urge to check their iPhones/iPads/MacBook we’ve required them to surrender all gadgets before bedtime. This way, I don’t have to police them and double check if they are actually sleeping or sneaking with their gadgets.

5. Parents Set A Good Example
As much as I want to TV marathon on episodes of Suits and have my fill of Harvey until way past midnight, I try to model healthy sleep habits for my kids. I know all too well that if I don't get enough sleep, I often wake up tired and cranky, making it harder to keep with the demands of the day.

Our Secret to Getting a Good Night's Sleep

One of the most important factor in getting a good night's sleep is the quality of our mattress and pillows. With so many options available in the market, it can be challenging to choose the right one. For me, I've always been happy with Uratex products, and ordering from them has always been a breeze. Their marketing director is a friend, and I just tell her what I want to purchase and she arranges for her team to deliver the items to me. No hassle! All our mattresses and majority of our pillows are purchased from Uratex.

Uratex imported latex pillows
I have been a long-time user of latex pillows from Uratex.

The imported latex foam pillows are naturally crafted from the milk of the tropical rubber tree, and is hypo-allergenic, anti-microbial, mildew-proof and dust mite-resistant. The growth of mildew and fungus is prevented and the pillow is made from a hygienic material that does not even require washing. PERFECT for my kids who suffer from eczema and seasonal allergies.

Uratex understands that people have different body types and varying preferences. As such, their latex pillows are available in different sizes and densities.

Our pillows are due to be replaced this year, and it's a great treat that  Uratex sent over some pillows to replace our old ones! Each latex pillow is reasonably priced at P2,000.00 +/-, depending on the size and density. You can view prices and options here: http://www.uratex.com.ph/latex/

Uratex Mattress

Although they have a webpage with a complete listing of all their items, nothing beats getting a feel of the product before you purchase, especially if it's something you would use long-term, like a mattress. Before I decided on my recent mattress purchase, I visited the Uratex Mattress Gallery at the Ronac Art Center along Ortigas. Ang galing lang! I was able to lie down on the different mattresses lined up, and choose the best one for my husband and me!

In the end, I chose the Uratex Premium Touch collection.

I share the bed with someone who outweighs me by more than a hundred pounds and is taller than me by almost a foot. It was a difficult compromise. We obviously need a very thick mattress to support him (Uratex Premium Touch provided for it with the high-performance and individually wrapped pocket springs), and yet something soft and comfortable enough to lie on (the Uratex Premium Touch mattress is topped with natural latex foam to relieve the body’s pressure points).

The kids mattresses are all from Uratex also. We are happy that they offer superior quality products at reasonable price points.

Uratex Cool Reverie Mattresses

While I was busy browsing through the Uratex webpage a few months back, looking up choices for our recent mattress purchase, I stumbled upon one of their new products which features a new technology that's perfect for our hot and humid Manila weather.

The Cool Reverie mattress has a unique feature for thermal control, leaving you refreshingly cool throughout the night. Sleeping will always be comfortable and cool with Uratex Cool Reverie. It distributes heat evenly to help maintain an ideal sleep temperature and improve the quality of sleep.

It comes in two varieties, so you can choose which one will fit you more: Cool Reverie Ridge and Cool Reverie Pinnacle. Click here to get more details about it.

Senso Memory Ultima Plus Traditional Pillows with Hydragel Beads

The perfect accompaniment to the thermal-control mattress is a pillow that is also able to regulate heat, di ba? Uratex also has that! They recently introduced their newest product, Senso Memory Ultima Plus Traditional Pillows with Hydragel Beads!

This extra plush pillow combines specially formulated Hydragel® beads with a Cooler® knit fabric cover for a refreshingly cooler, comfortable sleep. Its extra plush form reduces pressure points as well as gently supports your head and neck. Hydragel® beads are gel beads which absorb heat and provide optimal airflow. Upon contact on skin, memory foam infused with Hydragel® has been proven to be cooler by 1 – 2°C than those of regular memory foam.

The pillows are also treated with active ingredients that work together to protect against growth of bacteria, odour, mildew, and dust mites. It ensures the product stays fresh and clean for a long period of time.

The pillow retails for P2,199.75 each.
