#MomProtect: How To Proactively Protect Our Families Against Diseases

A few weeks ago, I saw some of my favorite moms for lunch at Grind Bistro in Net Park BGC. Like what usually happens when moms get together, the chika is almost non-stop, we talk about everything.

Shempre chika is made even better when it's done over good food.

I was able to do a quick catch-up with Mafae Belasco. I haven't seen her in quite a long time, and its amazing how this homeschooling mom of 5 can still look this gorgeous.

I was also able to spend time with Michelle, Mish and Sab. We haven't seen each other in a while din so there was a lot of catching up to do. Invariably, talk always turns to our family and kids.
Right before the photo above was taken, the girls were just asking me how I felt that R was going away on a school trip - out of the country! For 6 long weeks! Our boys are all almost of the same age, so they can all relate to what I'm feeling. Medyo masaya because I know he will be having a lot of learning opportunities, but slightly anxious also kase it's his first time to be away this long.

The topic for the day was very timely because I also just took the kids to our pedia for flu shots. R's school advised all the boys who are going on the trip to have their flu shot at least a month before departure to lessen their chances of getting sick. That's the first one on the school checklist for things to do kaya inuna ko na din.

After listening to the discussion, I now understand why flu shots are given every year. The influenza virus shifts pala every year. The World Health Organization (WHO), after a thorough study, dictates what vaccine strain to release every flu season. They recommend a new batch each year to match the strain that's circulating.

As moms, keeping our families happy and healthy is our top priority. It was just but natural that we would all meet up at a talk to know more about how we can proactively protect our families against vaccine-preventable dieseases.
Mom Protect highlights the importance of awareness of and access to new and better health prevention methods as family health and well-being is any mom's top priority.

Mommy Mundo and the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination (PFV) have banded together to educate mothers on proactive family prevention through "Mom Protect" so that we moms can have all of the most important facts about vaccinations.

I don't know about you, but the recent health news on mosquito-borne diseases like Dengue and Japanese encephalitis, as well as highly-communicable ones like flu sound scary if we aren’t very familiar with ways to prevent them. But with the right knowledge, moms can rise shoulder to shoulder in protecting families against these vaccine-preventable illnesses.

"Prevention is always better than cure, especially if cure is not always available," Dr. Cecilia Montalban, President of the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination said. “Advances in medical science have given us highly effective ways to avoid the pain and costs of diseases through vaccination."

"We've seen the effect misinformation can have on mothers like in the recent Japanese encephalitis outbreak scare," said Dr. Montalban. "By leading moms to helpful, effective, and efficient solutions against vaccine-preventable diseases, we'll be empowering them to live worry-free through proactive protection and prevention."

Vaccination is a personal decision for parents. Let's face it, the decision can be intimidating because what is at stake is our kids' health. As parents, we all want to make the right choices for our children's health.

It's a touchy subject that can be polarizing even among friends and family. But it is best to be able to gather relevant medical info and be updated so we can make informed decisions. One of the ways to get updates is to follow Philippine Foundation for Vaccination on Facebook.

During the said talk, I was able to get a copy of the 2017 Childhood Immunization Schedule, which I'm sharing with you below. Check niyo na if your kids are updated with their vaccines. I just contacted our pediatrician to ask her secretary to double check which booster vaccines my kids need.
