Coding For Teens

Gadgets are easily accessible to our kids. If left on their own, I am sure kids are more likely to play on their iPads and computers the whole day. I am lucky that my kids are into sports, this way I am sure that the time they spend on their gadgets is limited. But even if they are not on their gadgets for long periods of time, it's important for me that the time they learn to view electronics as tools for productivity, and not just an idle way to pass the time.

A few months ago, I took my 2 younger kids to the Junior Academy for Coding Knowledge (JACK) to give them an opportunity to learn coding.

My kids found the entrance to JACK impressive because it has this futuristic vibe to it.

With coding, kids could turn from mere gamers and users of technology to 

innovators and creators of technology. 

What is code?

Code is a language made up of words, numbers, and symbols that program instructions on your phone, laptop, or tablet - whether it’s to take a picture, play a movie, or open an app. This means learning how to code is just like learning a foreign language, in this case, it’s the language of computers. At JACK, young students are encouraged to explore the wonders of coding, making it possible for them to create technology.

Junior Academy for Coding Knowledge (JACK)

A premier study center right in the heart of Ortigas, JACK aims to teach kids and teens basic coding knowledge through hands-on training. JACK acknowledges how coding has become the literacy of the future, and with it comes its mission to provide an avenue for younger people to learn coding at an early age.

Classes are held in a fun and kid-friendly environment, it creates a space that encourages limitless imagination, as students learn to create new things with the latest tech trends and innovations. 

Classes are held every Saturday, from 1PM to 5PM, with a 30-minute break. JACK is located at Penthouse, East Tower, Philippine Stock Exchange Center, Exchange Road, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

Each class is composed of 10 to 15 students, usually from ages 7 to 16.
Classes are delivered by subject matter experts who share the same passion for the industry and teaching kids. JACK teachers are University of the Philippines graduates with a degree in the field of computer science, engineering, and information technology.

What I appreciate about JACK is that students can start on basic courses and later on level up to more advanced ones. This will allow them to better develop a skill or specialize in a specific course. JACK offers the following basic and advanced classes:

The Junior Coder Class is for 8 to 11-year-olds. In the Junior Coder Class, students become Junior Ninja Coders as they learn the basics of computers and the Internet using Python.

My kids belong to the Master Coder Classes, which are for students ages 12 to 16.  Students of any skill level can attend the Master Coder Classes, and they can progress from Ninja (beginner), to Ronin (intermediate), to Samurai (advanced). 

The Master Coder Classes are also divided into three different tracks: 

• Java – The language used for Android phones, Java is taught in the App Development track. It’s the most popular coding language, which kids can use to build their own apps.

• C – A classic programming language, C is taught in the Electronics Engineering track. Using this language, kids can design their own robots and command them to do different tasks.

• Python – One of the easiest languages to master, and also one of the most fun, Python is the language taught in the Game Development track. By enrolling in this track, kids can let their imaginations run wild and innovate by building their own games.
