Japan Day 10: {Osaka} Osaka Museum of History

On our 10th day in Osaka, we have been to almost all the sights on our checklist so it's a relatively easy day. We took the kids to the Osaka Museum of History where we know our middle child will enjoy getting to know more about Osaka.

Although our trip entailed a lot of walking, we did not particularly mind because it also gave us the opportunity to see a whole lot more of Japan.

The Osaka Museum of History lies just outside Osaka Castle Park where we had our hanami picnic. It is housed in a tall building just across the street from Osaka Castle, and offers stunning view of the castle from the top floors.

A view from inside the topmost floor of the museum.

We took the elevator to the top floors where the museum's collection were housed and followed the exhibits route down. The lower floors are occupied by a cafe and collection shop.

Here's another view from the top floor.

The top floor of this museum is a full-size re-creation of the inside of the Naniwanomiya Palace. We saw life-sized replicas of the vermillion-painted pillars and mannequins dressed in period court dresses depicting ancient court life

The museum is designed to give visitors a multi-dimensional experience of the 1,400-year history of Osaka, with life-size dioramas and reconstructions, scale models, and old photographs and movies.

Each of the floors chronicles a different period in Osaka's history, beginning from ancient days when Osaka served as Japan's first capital ending with more recent times as we move down the the lower floors with exhibits of the city's replica of the shopping arcades of the early Showa Period.

My kids enjoyed the place because of the great and detailed models.  They were able to learn of the history of this city just from looking at the dioramas and numerous scale models.

At the end of the exhibit, there was an interactive area where the kids enjoyed doing some puzzles

I would recommend this place if you have kids who might be interested to know more about the history of Osaka, and if you also have the time to spare. My kids enjoy trips to history museums since they are a curious bunch.

Here is R writing down his thoughts about what he enjoyed the most in the museum.
