Can You Really Catch A Cold by Getting Wet in the Rain? + A Euky BearGiveaway

I've heard my lola say it, I've heard my mom say it, and now, when we are headed out and it's raining and my kids refuse to open up an umbrella, I say it, too: "open your umbrella or you'll get sipon."

But can you really catch a cold by getting wet in the rain?

I turned to one of my local favorite authors who is also a physician for answers. "Ha-Ha-Hatsinggg!" is a book writtten by Luis Gatmaitan, MD.  It answers kids curiosities about what makes us sick in the first place. I bought the kids this book from the bookstore, and the kids and I read it one night. The author, also known as Tito Doc, is a practicing physician. He is also a four-time Don Carlos Palanca Memorial awardee for Literature.

The answer to this age-old question is complicated. But Tito Doc simplifies it for us.
Tito Doc says: No, not directly. Colds and flu are caused by viruses, its just that your immune system is often more run down when you are out in the rain and cold and shivering, and so it is easier for you to catch something.

Long story short, the author shares with us what we should do to avoid getting a cold:
1. Avoid crowded places.
2. Always sneeze into handkerchief when you have colds to avoid spreading the virus.
3. Wash hands frequently.
4. Don't forget to bring an umbrella or raincoat during the rainy season.

As a parent, I want to give my children the most natural remedies for their coughs and colds. And, as a parent, what I want more than natural remedies is sound sleep for my kids when they are not well.

Last year, I welcomed a new addition to my medical arsenal of safe and natural remedies to combat colds. Marilen, the local distributor of Euky Bear products sent me some tubes of Euky Bearub to try.  Since then, it has been a staple in my medicine cabinet.

Revisit this post to find out more about my product review for Euky Bearub

A gentle, soothing natural Eucalyptus chest rub made in Australia that helps relieve a sore throat, stuffy nose, irritating cough and general aches and pains.

It is suitable for the entire family, although for kids below the age of 24 months, Euky Bearub can be used by putting onto a tissue, a clean unused baby sock or small piece of cloth and placing near the head of the bed or crib.  Although Euky Bearub is a gentle formula, as a precaution we advise not to not use directly on baby’s skin unless on the advice of your health professional.

I love that it comes in a handy tube, which means that I don't have to deal with messy ointment pots or grease under my fingernails. I simply just squeeze the right amount from tube and rub.

On top of being able to clear stuffy nose and soothe sore throat, Euky Bearub can also be used to relieve muscular pains and aches, and soothe pain, swelling and redness of minor insect bites.

Euky Bear Inhalant

A few months ago, Marilen sent me another one of their products to try. This time it's the Euky Bear Inahalant.

Euky Bear Inhalant is for use in steam vaporizers or can be added directly to hot water. Euky Bear Inhalant releases its soothing medicated vapors to help relieve the symptoms of colds and ease nasal stuffiness.

I do not have a vaporizer, so I just use it with hot water in a bowl.  Here's how I use it:
1. Carefully place a heat-proof bowl or basin on a table or any stable surface and fill with hot water
2. Add 1/4 tsp Euky Bear Inhalant per 1 cup of water.
3. Make sure the child is seated comfortably with both feet on the floor. Inhale the vapors by leaning over the bowl. For younger kids, it is advisable that a responsible adult is watching at all times since accidents do happen.

What I like about it:
1. Longer Lasting Vapors. The slow release propylene glycol base ensures Euky Bear Inhalant vaporises slowly and evenly for maximum relief over a long period of time.
2. Natural way to feel better, without medicines. Unlike oral decongestants, steam therapy is non-invasive so can be used as often as required without causing side effects such as drowsiness.
3. A natural blend of essential oils especially designed for use in steam vaporiser. It can also be used in an inhaler or in a bowl or basin of hot water
4. relief from nasal congestion from colds & flu
5. Euky Bear Inhalant is also safer as it contains a bitterant to further reduce any possibility of accidental ingestion

Just as I'm writing this, one of the kids is suffering from the flu. You already know what my go to items are.
